Editorial Note
Our feminist reading lists are carefully curated recommendations that make no claim to completeness. They are based on the assessments of a panel of expert volunteers and reflect a collective curatorial process.
The project aims to highlight works by female authors that are suitable for classroom use — and beyond — offering concrete alternatives to the male-dominated reading lists that still prevail. It also seeks to broaden existing reading conventions and strengthen female perspectives within the literary canon.
The focus lies on German-speaking authors, with particular attention to Austrian writers. While conscious efforts have been made to include intersectional perspectives and voices from diverse cultural backgrounds, certain Eurocentric gaps remain unavoidable. Nevertheless, through ongoing collaboration with partners in Germany, the Netherlands, and Armenia, the project’s scope continues to expand — enriched by ever more diverse literary traditions and experiences.
Where no official age recommendations exist, we have provided our own assessments to the best of our knowledge. We encourage teachers to review each title individually before classroom use to ensure its suitability for their specific age group and teaching context.
The project is intentionally open-ended. The reading lists are meant to grow, evolve, and be continually re-evaluated — much like the literary canon itself.
